Hessian sacks are used for packaging products such as rice, coffee beans and potatoes. The woven nature of the fabric allows the contents to breathe and is therefore ideal for products that are moisture sensitive. Hessian Sandbags are able to hold large amounts of sand to prevent water damage to properties. A sandbag is a bag or sack made of hessian (burlap), polypropylene or other sturdy materials that is filled with sand or soil and used for such purposes as flood control, military fortification in trenches and bunkers, shielding glass windows in war zones, ballast, counterweight, and in other applications requiring mobile fortification, such as adding improvised additional protection to armoured vehicles or tanks. Sacks would also be filled with hay or straw and to be used as target practice for bayonet training during early warfare.

Not only is Hessian sourced from cheap, sustainable, and readily grown plants, but it requires very little tending and takes up very little room for something that gives out a large yield. Beyond its sustainable nature, Hessian fabric is also completely biodegradable
